The Power Phrase System: Power Phrase Universe?

The Power Phrase System

Give every child the words to change their world

Power Phrase Universe is not a card game. It is a structured therapeutic language system giving psychologists and children a shared vocabulary for navigating emotions, de-escalating distress, and building lasting resilience.

Evidence-based · CASEL-aligned · CBT-compatible · Trauma-informed · Ages 4–16

Words change everything

Power Phrase Universe was built on a single clinical insight: when a child cannot find words for what they are feeling, they cannot access the cognitive tools to regulate it. The system creates that language — systematically, progressively, and in partnership with the clinician.

The six decks work as a coherent framework, each targeting a different stage of the therapeutic conversation — from initial de-escalation through to behavioural activation and advanced language sequencing. Used in sequence or selectively, they form a complete clinical toolkit.

Unlike generic SEL tools that ask children to introspect abstractly, PPU meets children exactly where they are developmentally — in Piaget’s Concrete Operational Stage — by anchoring language to visible, doable action.

This is not a card game.

It is a structured therapeutic language system — a clinical-grade tool designed for use by psychologists, counsellors, school counsellors, and informed caregivers working with children ages 4–16.

Every sequence has a purpose. Every word has been chosen deliberately.

The result is a shared vocabulary that travels between clinic, classroom, and home — reinforcing change across every environment the child inhabits.

Four steps. One shared language.

PILA is the core clinical framework at the heart of the system. It gives both clinician and child a structured, repeatable pathway through emotional distress — applicable in any setting, with any presentation, at any developmental stage.

P

Pause

Creating space between the stimulus and the response. The first and most critical clinical intervention — helping children recognise the moment before escalation. This is the window where regulation becomes possible.

Anchor Cards · Grounding Deck
I

Identify

Naming the emotion with precision. The Feelings Intensity Scale and PILA Cards work together here, moving from vague distress to specific emotional identification. Named feelings can be worked with. Unnamed feelings cannot.

PILA Cards · Feelings Intensity Scale
L

Listen

Turning attention inward. Anchor Cards support this stage, grounding the child in the present moment and creating the safety needed for genuine self-reflection. The child learns to trust their own internal signals.

A

Act

Moving from emotion to purposeful response. Power Action Cards and Modal Sequences guide the child toward constructive, language-led action — the critical step that transforms emotional awareness into identity formation.

Modal Sequences · Action Cards

Modal Sentence → Action → Identity

At the core of every PPU card sequence is a three-stage architecture that works with the developing brain. Children do not need to understand why it works. They only need to say it, do it, and become it.

Stage 1

Modal Sentence

“I will” · “I can be” · “We shall”
A concrete linguistic anchor of agency requiring no emotional insight to use.

Stage 2

Action Verb

“give” · “listen” · “explore”
A visible, doable behaviour that activates mirror neuron learning.

Stage 3

Identity Outcome

GENEROUS · RESPECTFUL · CURIOUS
A durable trait the child begins to claim as their own self-concept.

A complete developmental curriculum

Each deck addresses a specific domain of emotional and social development. Use them in progressive sequence for deep transformation, or select the deck most aligned with your current clinical focus. Every deck is immediately usable — no training required.

01

Self-Identity & Agency

The foundational deck

Builds the child’s core sense of “I am capable.” Entry point for learned helplessness, low self-worth, and identity fragmentation. Uses “I will” and “I can be” Modal Sentences exclusively.

02

Emotional Regulation

The self-management deck

Addresses dysregulation, impulsivity, and emotional reactivity through concrete behavioural anchors. For children who cannot yet name their feelings, this deck gives them language for their body’s experience.

03

Relational Skills

The connection deck

Builds prosocial competencies through “We” Modal Sentences. Designed for attachment disruption, peer rejection, and trust deficits. Introduces the concept of a safe, capable “we” for the first time.

04

Growth Mindset

The learning deck

Targets curiosity, creativity, and learning resilience. Valuable for school avoidance, fear of failure, and cognitive shutdown. Reframes challenge as exploration.

05

Character & Values

The moral reasoning deck

Develops conscience in concrete, action-based form — without shame. For conduct presentations and children who struggle to understand the impact of their behaviour on others.

06

Leadership & Purpose

The advanced deck

The final stage — activates the child’s capacity to positively influence others. For children who have consolidated earlier decks and are ready to develop genuine social leadership.

LEADERCOOPERATIVECREATIVE

Designed for clinical and educational settings

The system is built to travel — between clinic, school, and home — with consistent language reinforcing change across every environment the child inhabits.

  • Daily morning ritual and intention practice
  • Reinforces clinic language at home
  • Parent coaching and caregiver engagement

Fits inside the frameworks you already use

PPU is not a replacement for your clinical approach — it is a language layer that operates inside any evidence-based framework, adding structured vocabulary and behavioural anchors to whatever modality you already practise.

CBT

Modal Sentences function as thought records in action. Identity outcomes map directly to cognitive restructuring goals.

Trauma-Informed

Concrete language bypasses the abstraction barriers created by chronic cortisol exposure and PFC suppression.

CASEL-Aligned

All six decks map to CASEL’s five SEL competency domains, making school implementation and reporting straightforward.

Person-Centred

The child chooses their sequence. Agency and autonomy are built into the architecture of every card interaction.

Play Therapy

Card sequences are play-compatible. The illustrated action cards activate mirror neuron engagement through visual narrative.

Attachment-Based

“We” Modal Sentences introduce relational language for children who have never experienced a safe, capable “we.”

What changes, and when

Because the PPU pathway is behavioural and repeated, observable changes emerge within defined clinical windows — making progress trackable and reportable to parents, schools, and funding bodies.

4–6wk

Initial Behaviour Change

Prosocial behaviours aligned with target outcomes — increased sharing, reduced impulsivity, improved listening.

6–8wk

Identity Self-Reference

Children begin describing themselves using the identity outcome language spontaneously — without prompting.

8–12wk

Peer & Teacher Report

Significant others notice and report changes in social behaviour and self-regulation capacity.

12+wk

Durable Identity Shift

Target traits demonstrated without card prompting. Identity internalised as stable self-concept.
